What are the regulations in New Zealand for disposing of animal waste?
Do not confuse Home Compostable and just Biodegradable.
Just biodegradable alone is not good enough. Recyclable bags are also not good enough as the animal waste inside them can be a biohazard.
We manufacture our poop bags in accordance with the New Zealand and Australian Home Compostable standards, Australian AS 4736 / AS 5810 (There is no certification in NZ) which NZ stipulates that they must biodegrade to a natural fertiliser in your compost.
Our poop bags biodegrade in Landfill, and are home compostable.
Unlike most poop bags sold in New Zealand our poop bags do not need sun light or oxygen to break them down. There are no microplastic’s and they do not fragment.
We make ours stronger, bigger and easy to open to protect you.
Despite being home compostable and the NZ law saying that they must be home compostable there are no industrial facilities in NZ to compost pet waste bags so the majority of them are put into general waste and go into landfill. This is because animal waste carries pathogens and parasites that local councils cannot legally process them.
In NZ it is against the law to use plastic bags of any kind to pick up your dog's waste as these will not break down in the land fill.
As a company I did my research and sourced the best manufacturer that I could find to produce our poop bags, my focus trying to help the planet and keep people safe.
We get great feedback about them and try to play our part as a responsible business.
So yes, they are Home Compostable and yes put them in the red bin/ general waste but they will break down quicker and will not leave fragments like most other brands.
