First of all get your dog used to the Clicker.  Click it behind your back so the dog doesn't get concerned about the noise.  It's best to start by using your dog's biscuits as you don't want your dog to put on weight or get sick.

You can start this when your dog is a puppy

Throw a treat on the floor and wait for your dog to eat it. Do this several times, then tell your dog to sit as he does click your clicker, and give your dog the treat.  You are rewarding your dog when it sits, and it will start to realise that when he does what he has been told to do, as he associates the clicker with the word sit, and it will be rewarded.  Make sure you tell your dog that its a good dog.  Shape your dog's behaviour by using the clicker.  You must be consistant and don't get annoyed when your pet doesn't quite get it the first few times.  Keep doing this over a period of time with what ever you want your dog to learn.  After a while you can take the clicker from behind your back and your dog will just associate the click noise with what it is supposed to do. 

Be positive and don't forget to reward your dog with a treat or a pat when it has done what you have asked it to do.  Don't forget to make it fun.
