Buddyrider NZ: Have Your Best Summer Yet With Your Dog

Make This Summer the One You and Your Dog Will Never Forget

Summer in New Zealand is made for getting outside.

Longer evenings, warmer days, trips to the beach, weekend adventures, bike rides and plenty of time enjoying the outdoors with your best friend.

But what if your little dog could come with you on the bike too?

That is exactly why we love the Buddyrider® dog bike seat.

If you have been thinking about getting a Buddyrider in New Zealand, this could be the summer to do it.

Instead of leaving your dog at home while you head out for a bike ride, the Buddyrider lets you bring your four-legged buddy along for the adventure.

And judging by the number of happy Buddyrider dogs we see, they absolutely love it!

What Is a Buddyrider?

The Buddyrider is a specially designed bike seat for dogs, allowing small dogs to sit comfortably and securely in front of you while you ride.

Unlike a traditional dog bike basket mounted on the handlebars, the Buddyrider is positioned centrally over the bike. This helps keep your dog's weight closer to the centre of the bicycle, giving the rider better control and balance.

You can also see your dog while you're riding, which makes the experience much more enjoyable for both of you.

It is designed for smaller dogs, with the Series 2 suitable for dogs up to approximately 11.34kg, although your dog's body shape, height and length also need to be considered when deciding whether they are a suitable fit.

Why We Think Buddyrider Is Perfect for a New Zealand Summer

There is something pretty special about being able to take your dog with you instead of leaving them behind.

Imagine an early morning cycle before the day gets too warm.

A ride down to the beach.

A trip to your favourite dog-friendly café.

A weekend ride around the neighbourhood.

Or simply getting outside together and enjoying a beautiful New Zealand summer day.

Your dog gets to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the world around them — and you get to enjoy the adventure together.

That's what makes the Buddyrider so much more than a dog bike seat.

It's a way of spending more time together.

The Buddyrider Is Designed Around Balance

One of the things that makes the Buddyrider different from many traditional dog carriers for bikes is its central position.

Rather than putting your dog's weight out on the front handlebars or behind the rider, the Buddyrider sits over the centre of the bicycle.

This design helps minimise the effect of your dog's weight on the handling of the bike.

And because your dog is directly in front of you, you can keep an eye on them throughout your ride.

For us, that is one of the biggest reasons the Buddyrider is such a clever design.

Buddyrider Series 2 – Even Better for Adventures

The Buddyrider Series 2 has introduced some useful improvements to the original design.

The paw deck can be adjusted to help accommodate different dogs, while the updated arm and receiver provide greater flexibility when fitting the seat to your bicycle.

That means you can get a more comfortable position for your dog while also finding the right setup for your bike.

The Buddyrider is designed to fit most adult bicycles, although there are some important measurements and fitting requirements to check before purchasing.

For example, you need sufficient space between the seat post and handlebars, and the Buddyrider should not be fitted to a carbon-fibre seat post.

If you're not sure whether your bike will work, it is always worth checking before you ride.

How Do You Get Your Dog Used to a Buddyrider?

This is one of the questions we are asked most often.

Our advice is simple:

Don't rush it.

Before your first ride, put the Buddyrider on the ground and let your dog investigate it.

Use treats, praise and plenty of encouragement.

Once your dog is comfortable sitting in the seat, secure them correctly and try a very short ride somewhere quiet and safe.

Your first ride doesn't need to be a 10km adventure!

A few minutes around a quiet area is a much better way to start.

As both you and your dog become comfortable, you can gradually increase the distance.

The Buddyrider manufacturer also recommends starting with short rides and allowing your dog to become accustomed to the seat before going on longer adventures.

Summer Safety Comes First

While riding with your dog can be fantastic fun, it's important to remember that your dog is a passenger — so safety needs to come first.

Always make sure the Buddyrider is correctly fitted to your bicycle and that your dog is properly secured in the seat.

Start slowly and choose quiet, smooth routes while you and your dog get used to riding together.

And remember that New Zealand summer temperatures can become very hot, particularly during the middle of the day.

For summer rides, early morning or later in the afternoon can be much more comfortable for your dog.

Take water, avoid hot surfaces and keep an eye on your dog throughout the ride.

The goal isn't to ride as far as possible.

The goal is to have fun together.

Is a Buddyrider Right for Your Dog?

The Buddyrider is designed for smaller dogs, but weight isn't the only thing to consider.

Your dog's length, height, girth and overall shape are important too.

The Series 2 is designed for dogs up to approximately 11.34kg, with specific dimensions that should be checked before purchasing.

If you have a small breed such as a Cavoodle, French Bulldog, Chihuahua, Dachshund, Maltese, Shih Tzu, Pomeranian or small Terrier, it may be worth checking whether your dog is a suitable fit.

Every dog is different, so don't rely on breed alone.

Make This Your Dog's Best Summer Yet

We all say we're going to spend more time outdoors.

But life gets busy.

The great thing about a Buddyrider is that it gives you another way to include your dog in the things you already enjoy doing.

You don't have to leave them at home.

You don't have to give up your bike rides.

And you don't need to choose between exercise and spending time with your best friend.

Just take them with you.

This summer, discover a new way to explore New Zealand together.
